I look beyond the literal and see zippers as metaphors: Contain/Release Show/Hide Restrained/Free Secure/Vulnerable Suppress/ Express Divide/Unify
To function, the zipper must be operated by a human hand. How many thousands of times have we zipped and unzipped. In that moment, we are dressed or secured in someway, or released from whatever binds or holds us in.
The mystery of this mechanism of interlocking teeth, fastening and unfastening, seems ingenious to me.
Interestingly, it was the sound of zippers that sparked the curiosity for exploration. Likewise, it was concurrent with a series of paintings depicting connections among women, sewing, and fashion.
I very much like the way a zipper looks. Through the process of wet paper and fabric casting, I have molded zipper forms, transforming this common object into an objet d'art. A 3 dimensional, indelible, monochromatic image is created, emphasizing shape, structure and design.
