STATEMENT
A thimble is a small pitted cap worn over the fingertip as protection while pushing a needle through cloth or leather. Objects generally intrigue me on several layers; their intended use, their symbolism and use as metaphors. It is the latter in which I engage the thimble as a talisman, a symbol of protection, of strength and constancy.
With this concept in mind, the work utilizes this humble object and the wearer's hand and gestures as an intervention and call to action to protect the fractured parts of ourselves, our families and our ruptured world.
I chose to portray the hands in white as it stands for purity, all things good and right. It is the color of illumination, and of insight, and it is associated with knowledge and learning. Alice Walker said “ The little I knew about my own self wouldn't have filled a thimble” My hope is for humanity to fill all the thimbles in existence with all things good and right, respect, love and peace.
